How We Built a Booking Marketplace on Sharetribe in 3 Weeks (BraidHairs Case Study)
By Hammed Omoyele · · 2 min read
Most marketplace founders ask the same question first: do we need a custom build, or can we launch on Sharetribe? This is how one real project answered it.
The brief
BraidHairs is a two-sided marketplace that connects clients with hair-braiding and textured-hair stylists. Clients browse by style, search by location and book directly. The founder needed a real, working MVP that could take bookings and split revenue, fast and on a tight budget.
The decision: stay on native Sharetribe features
The temptation on any marketplace project is to start writing custom code on day one. We did the opposite. We built on Sharetribe's native capabilities and only customised where the product genuinely needed it.
That choice is what made a short timeline realistic. Every feature we didn't have to build from scratch was a feature we didn't have to test, maintain or debug later.
What the MVP covers
- The full booking lifecycle: request, accept, complete, then reviews from both sides.
- A 12% / 88% commission split, verified end to end through Stripe Connect, so the platform and the stylist are each paid correctly.
- Radius search with Mapbox, so clients can find stylists near them.
- Listing photo galleries, because hair work sells on visuals.
- In-app messaging between client and stylist.
- Stylist verification badges to build trust on both sides of the marketplace.
- Content and legal pages: Styles & Pricing, Become a Stylist, About Us, How It Works, plus Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Cookies Policy and a Stylist Agreement.
The stack
Sharetribe Flex, Stripe Connect and Mapbox. Nothing exotic, which is the point.
Timeline and result
The MVP was delivered in about 3 weeks, approved by the client, and put on a test environment ahead of moving to production. The client is now planning Phase 2.
What to take from this
- Launch the smallest complete loop first. A booking marketplace needs request, accept, pay and review working together before anything else.
- Verify the money flow early. Test the commission split end to end before you polish the interface.
- Customise later, with evidence. Real users will tell you which custom features are worth building. Guessing costs more.
If you're planning a Sharetribe marketplace, or you've outgrown the default features and need something custom, I'd be glad to talk it through.
